Discover how simple it is to secure long-term residency in the UAE for you and your family. Our expert guidance helps you navigate every step with ease.
A UAE residence visa allows foreigners to live in the UAE for long periods—usually 2 to 3 years—with renewals up to 10 years. Unlike tourist visas, it lets expats live, work, or study in the UAE. Since the UAE doesn’t offer permanent residency, residents renew their visa to remain in the country legally.
You can become a resident through employment, starting a business, freelancing, studying, family sponsorship, property ownership (AED 1M+), or a Golden Visa. Among these, launching a business is often the fastest and most affordable route to residency.
A valid UAE residence visa, you can live in any Emirate—Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and more. However, your driver’s license must be issued from the Emirate where your visa was granted. Dubai is popular but slightly more expensive to reside in.
To get a visa: register your company, obtain an establishment card, receive an entry permit, take a medical exam, apply for an Emirates ID, and get your passport stamped. Only the medical and stamping steps must be done inside the UAE.
Costs vary by Emirate and visa type. Northern Emirates like Ajman or UAQ are more affordable. Dubai is pricier due to higher registration and mandatory insurance fees. Business setup and health insurance also affect total cost.
You can open a bank account, sponsor family, rent property, and stay long-term without reapplying for tourist visas. Residency also makes it easier for professionals and investors to access UAE markets and opportunities.
To keep your visa valid, visit the UAE at least once every six months. Failing to do so will result in visa cancellation, and you’ll have to reapply. Make sure to mark your calendar and plan your travels accordingly.
Renewing is easy. Take a medical test 1–2 weeks before expiry, then submit the report with your passport to immigration. Once approved, your visa is renewed, allowing you to continue living in the UAE legally.
You may apply for 5- or 10-year Golden Visas if you're an investor (AED 5–10M) or a talented professional in science, medicine, or the arts. These visas offer long-term residency without frequent renewals.
Visa cancellation must be done by your sponsor (employer, business, family). Required documents include passport, Emirates ID, and a clearance certificate. Rules differ if you're cancelling inside or outside the UAE.
Send your passport to the issuing authority. Once approved, your visa will be officially cancelled. This method is the most direct and typically takes a few business days to process.
If outside the UAE for over six months, your visa cancels automatically. If less than six months, send your passport to UAE via courier or use a visa service company for assistance with the cancellation.
Visas are cancelled by Free Zone authorities or GDRFAD (for mainland visas). You can cancel online via ICA/GDRFAD, at a typing centre, or through their mobile app. Free Zone cancellations must be done directly at their office.
To cancel a visa, you’ll need: Cancellation paper (signed) Emirates ID & labour card Original passport Ministry of Labour clearance Keep these ready for a smooth cancellation process.
Yes, but it’s subject to conditions. You must meet a higher income threshold and provide proof of housing and insurance. It's best to consult GDRFAD or a legal advisor to ensure all criteria are met before applying.
